In 2010 I left a career in the United States and moved back to India. I met people cast out by their own families — not for anything they had done, but because they had leprosy. A disease that is completely curable had cost them their homes, their marriages, their place at the table.
For fifteen years I've cared for people the world still calls “untouchable.” This September I'm riding 7,126 miles to give 200 of them a full year of care.
It's a long ride. Their road has been longer.
Leprosy is still real. And still curable.
New cases diagnosed worldwide every year. Nearly 60% of them in India.
Curable with six months to a year of antibiotics. The medicine has existed for decades.
Indian laws still contain discriminatory provisions against people affected by leprosy.
